President Milanović Meets with Representatives of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Zagreb on the Occasion of its 150th Anniversary

The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović received today the dean, vice deans and professors of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb on the occasion of its 150th anniversary.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Zagreb is the oldest and largest Croatian scientific and higher education institution of humanities and social sciences and a significant cultural institution with great influence in Croatian culture and society. A century and a half of the Faculty’s work was marked on Saturday by a formal session which was attended by the Special Adviser to the President for Culture Zdravko Zima as the delegate of the President of the Republic.

Under the name of Faculty of Philosophy with philosophical-historical and mathematical-natural sciences departments, it began work in the 1874-1875 academic year, and over the years has acquired the status of the largest and most important institution for the study of social sciences and humanities in Croatia, the dean of the Faculty, Domagoj Tončinić, pointed out at the meeting. He added that the large number and diversity of departments and chairs at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences speaks to the extent to which it is needed in society and, in general, about its social role.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb is organized into 23 departments with 130 chairs, 15 scientific and teaching centres, three foreign cultural centres and a common library, considered to be the largest in the Republic of Croatia after the National and University Library. There are currently 5,211 students studying at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and 216 doctoral students at the doctoral level.

In addition to the dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, Domagoj Tončinić, at the meeting in the President’s Office were the vice dean for organization and development Slađan Turković, vice dean for study programmes and lifelong education, Dolores Grmača, vice dean for teaching and students Ivan Markić, vice dean for science and international cooperation, Lovorka Magaš Bilandžić, and professors from Faculty Departments: Nevena Škrbić Alempijević from the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Ivana Vidović Bolt from the Department of West Slavic Languages ​​and Literatures, Goran Sunajko from the Department of Philosophy, Marko Liker from the Department of Phonetics, Damir Ljubotina from the Department of Psychology, Vanja Polić Jurković from the Department of English, Evelina Rudan from the Department of Croatian Studies, Ivana Bašić from the Department of English, Petra Matović from the Department of Classical Philology, Vedran Juričić from the Department of Information and Communication Sciences, Danijela Katunar from the Department of Linguistics, Ivica Šute from the Department of History, Ivana Olujić from the Department of Romance Studies, as well as the president of the Student Union of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Andrej Mitić.

Alongside President Milanović were the Adviser to the President for Education Jadranka Žarković and the Special Adviser to the President for Culture Zdravko Zima.
