The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović met today with Branko Šubić, the organizer of the “Branko Šubić for Defenders: Savudrija-Petrinja 2024” sports project. This ultramarathon stage race, now in its fourth year, coincides with Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day, the Day of Croatian Defenders, the Day of the Liberation of Petrinja, and the Day of Croatian Defenders of Petrinja.

During the meeting, Mr. Šubić briefed President Milanović about the preparations for this year’s patriotic sports project. This event, commemorating the decisive moments of the Homeland War and honouring the sacrifices of exceptional individuals in safeguarding Croatia’s freedom, is being organized for the fourth time. Mr. Šubić emphasized that this year’s route is the most demanding yet. Since its inception in 2017, marathons have followed in 2019 and 2021. This year, Mr. Šubić plans to kick off the run on July 31st in Savudrija. Over seven days, he aims to cover over 300 kilometres, arriving in Petrinja on August 6th, coinciding with the observance of the Day of the Liberation of Petrinja, the Day of Croatian Defenders of Petrinja, Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day, and the Day of Croatian Defenders.

Highlighting the initiative’s aim to visit monuments dedicated to the fallen and missing Croatian defenders, to honour them and pay homage, Mr. Šubić expressed gratitude to the President of the Republic for accepting patronage of this year’s project, “Branko Šubić for Defenders: Savudrija-Petrinja 2024.”

President Milanović was accompanied at the meeting by Marijan Mareković, Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for Homeland War Veterans.
