The President of the Republic of Croatia Zoran Milanović and his spouse Sanja Musić Milanović attended this evening the “Doctors’ Charity Ball” in the Esplanade Hotel in Zagreb on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Croatian Medical Association.

“In the life of a nation 150 years is a lot and little. As an identity, our nation is much older. However, at the time the Medical Association was founded, Croatia was just politically and territorially developing since Dalmatia was then not part of the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia”, President Milanović noted about the history of the Croatian Medical Association.

“I believe this Association was thoroughly checked by the Hungarian police before it was allowed to be founded because that’s how it was once upon a time, there was not freedom of association. This Association was one of the best in Europe. Certainly the Association had a political resonance and connotation”, he underlined among others and congratulated the Croatian Medical Association on its big anniversary.

The “Doctors’ Charity Ball” was organized following a four-year pause to raise funds for various charity purposes. This year the proceeds will go to found the Club of the “Andrija Štampar” School of Public Health, of the Faculty of Medicine and of the Croatian Medical Association, which will additionally contribute to the advancement of the healthcare system.

The Croatian Medical Association, as the country’s oldest umbrella professional association of doctors, has a rich history and continuously works towards the improvement of healthcare, professional development, promotion of medical ethics, and the protection of doctors’ interests. It was founded in 1874 for the protection of the people’s health and nurtures professional and scientific work through various initiatives and projects.

The Association plays a major role in the medical community, and its publishing activity including the “Liječnički vjesnik” (Medical Journal), provides a platform for sharing expert knowledge and experience among doctors. Doctors’ Day in Croatia is traditionally marked on the day the Croatian Medical Association was founded, 26 February, which symbolizes the importance and the contribution of doctors to the improvement of the health and well-being of citizens.
