“It is a unique privilege to be the first Croatian President to visit the capital of this great country, Brazil,” said the President of the Republic, Zoran Milanović, after meeting with the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with whom he officially met on Monday in the capital of Brasilia.

There are practically no topics concerning the modern world on which Croatia and Brazil differ, President Milanović said. “Starting with climate change and climate action, which is a global problem and can only be addressed as such. This topic is very important for Croatia because our economic status depends on the idea of preservation of the world as it is and as it should be. It is exactly because of that that the tourist industry is after us, because it wants our beautiful beaches,” he said, adding that we must work harder to stop climate change and global warming.

“The issues we focused on concern international peace and security and the need for uniform, visible and measurable standards in relations between the states, nations and continents. Also, achieving peace through the multilateral bodies of the modern world, whether it is the United Nations, or something else that would contribute to the efforts that are key to preserving the world as we know it,” said President Milanović.

“Peace and humanity in Palestine between Israel and the State of Palestine, which these days is being recognised by many, but still not by Croatia. Peace in Eastern Europe, war and the Russian aggression against Ukraine. All these issues are important, and adequate scope and understanding are required for problems to be dealt with only through diplomacy and dialogue in good faith,” the President of the Republic remarked.

“The contribution and effort of leaders like you, Mr. President, is more than important and this cannot be emphasized enough,” said President Milanović, who will also meet today with the President of the National Congress of the Federative Republic of Brazil Rodrigo Otavio Soares Pacheco.

President Milanović is the first Croatian head of state to officially visit Brazil. During his official visit to Brazil, he will also visit Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, where he will meet with the mayors and governors of those states. In São Paulo, he will meet with members of the Croatian community.
