President Milanović Appoints Tomislav Paškvalin Commissioner for Sports
The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović has appointed Tomislav Paškvalin as the Commissioner for Sports. The Decision on his appointment takes effect on 1 June 2024.
Tomislav Paškvalin is one of Croatia’s most decorated water polo players, having won two Olympic gold medals with the former Yugoslav national team – in Los Angeles in 1984 and Seoul in 1988. He also claimed the world championship title in Madrid in 1986, the World Cup in 1987, and became the European vice-champion in 1985 and 1987. Additionally, he won the Mediterranean Games in 1983. Paškvalin has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Franjo Bučar State Award for Sports in 2007. He was twice named the best athlete of Zagreb (1984 and 1986) and earned three trophies from the Croatian Academic Sports Society Mladost.
In July 2014, he was appointed as the Assistant Minister of Science, Education and Sports, responsible for the Sports Directorate. He has held various positions related to sports, including serving as the director of the Center for Research and Development of Sports at the Zagreb Sports Association. In this role, he prepared analytical studies necessary for creating strategic documents for sports activities at the city level. Additionally, he was the director of the Croatian Olympic Center Bjelolasica.
Paškvalin is the Vice President of the Croatian Olympians Club, a member of the Assembly of the Croatian Olympic Committee, and the Vice President of the Association of Veteran and Recreational Athletes.
