The President of the Republic Zoran Milanović held a meeting today with representatives of the Department of the Chakavian Council Kornić, an association whose main goal is the preservation, development and restoration of traditional and any other form of culture that enriches life on the island of Krk.

This year, the Department of the Chakavian Council Kornić celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Kornić Summer School of Glagolitic Script, which was held under the patronage of the President of the Republic on 31 July in the large hall of the Krk Town Council. After thanking President Milanović for his patronage, representatives of the Department of the Chakavian Council Kornić – President Damir Kremenić, Treasurer Sandra Sekulić, Secretary Gordana Drpić and Summer School of Glagolitic Script lecturers Lovro Krsnik and Janja Žic – informed President Milanović about the association’s main activities. In addition to organizing the aforementioned summer schools, the association also maintains and enriches the Kornić Regional Ethnographic Collection, known as the Etno kuća, which boasts 1,500 artefacts, and the work of the Frankopan Reading Room, which has some 5,000 books and other collections.

The meeting also discussed the importance of preserving the Glagolitic script, and the delegation of the Department of the Chakavian Council informed President Milanović about a number of other events that have taken place for years to that end: Kornić museum nights, Fešta od presnaca (local cuisine festival), Dan od kuće – rođendan muzeja (museum anniversary event), Misec hrvackoga libra na Kornić and “ČA” čitalnica (public readings of Chakavian texts). Furthermore, the association published collections of Chakavian writings and poetry, as well as books about folk costumes and the oldest chapel of Dubašnica in the village of Kremenići. After holding several exhibits entitled Živa glagoljica otoka Krka [Living Glagolitic script of the island of Krk], the publication of a catalogue on the Glagolitic phenomena of the island of Krk is in the works.

The new Glagolitic movement in Croatia began in Zagreb in the late eighties and in 1993 the first Kornić Summer School of Glagolitic Script, widely recognized in Croatia and abroad, was launched. New schools were subsequently established in Punat, Vrh, Bogovići, Omišalj and Vrbnik, following the school in Kornić.

President Milanović was accompanied by the Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for Culture Zdravko Zima.
