“The citizens are watching how we work, how we manage public money, they are most sensitive to this issue. Corruption in the public sector overwhelms Croatia. Whoever from whichever walk of life can contribute to improve things in Croatia has my support regardless of the party they come from”, the President of the Republic Zoran Milanović said today in Rijeka following his working meeting with the City of Rijeka leadership.

The President stated that local authorities have to cooperate as much as possible with the central government and absorb every euro from European Funds.

President Milanović said that European Funds are one of the main reasons why Croatia is in the European Union, and added that big differences exist between EU states. “Croatia has given a lot for this and has also given up a lot. In my view the mission of public officials and politicians is largely to fight for every euro that is available”, he noted, and said that every euro not absorbed is a wasted euro and a lost opportunity for Croatia.

The mayor of Rijeka Marko Filipović said that Rijeka is the largest construction site in Croatia, which is the result of a synergy between all projects that are under way and about to start in Rijeka. He expressed satisfaction that many international companies recognized Rijeka as a good place to invest and to create new jobs. “Croatia’s entry into the Schengen Area and the introduction of the euro give Rijeka new prospects because we have flourished when we were part of a broader community throughout history,” mayor Filipović stated and expressed confidence that through the realization of these projects a better period lies ahead for Rijeka.

Besides the mayor of Rijeka Marko Filipović at the meeting with President Milanović were his deputies Sandra Krpan and Goran Paličevski, and alongside the President was the Commissioner of the President for Sports Željko Jovanović.
