At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Malta George Vella, the President of the Republic of Croatia Zoran Milanović and his wife Sanja Musić Milanović will pay a two-day return State visit to the Republic of Malta.

The President of the Republic of Croatia will begin his State visit to the Republic of Malta on Monday, 11 July at a meeting with the President of the Republic of Malta George Vella. After the official welcoming ceremony in St. George’s Square in Valletta, the two presidents will hold a tête-à-tête, followed by a bilateral meeting between the official delegations of the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Malta. President Milanović will also meet with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of the Republic of Malta Anġlu Farrugia, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Malta Robert Abela, and Opposition leader Bernard Grech.

The State visit of the President of the Republic of Croatia to the Republic of Malta follows the State visit of the President of the Republic of Malta George Vella to the Republic of Croatia in October 2021 with the aim of further strengthening friendly relations between the two states. Croatia and Malta have excellent bilateral relations, with no open issues, which the two presidents have confirmed during President Vella’s visit to Zagreb. During his State visit to Malta it is expected that President Milanović and his host will discuss further strengthening bilateral ties for which there is potential in many sectors, and since both countries, members of the European Union, belong to the Mediterranean region.

The meetings should further address current topics that are on the EU’s agenda and topics that are of special importance for Croatia: Malta’s support for Croatia’s accession to the Schengen Area, Malta’s experience with the euro since Croatia will soon join the euro area, as well as the situation in South East Europe and plans for European Union enlargement to that region, which Malta supports according to earlier statements by President Vella. An additional topic of the meetings will be the current security and economic crises caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine.
