Sanja Musić Milanović’s Global Activity in Promoting Health Announced during Visit to World Health Organization

Prof Dr Sanja Musić Milanović, wife of the President of the Republic Zoran Milanović, participated in an event in Geneva co-organized by Croatia, Mexico and the World Health Organization entitled “Tipping the Scales: Global Actions to Address Obesity“. Mrs. Musić Milanović addressed the gathering with opening and closing remarks at the panel discussion, which introduced the World Health Organization’s Acceleration Plan aimed at stopping obesity.

Assistant Director-General for Universal Health Coverage – Healthier Populations Naoko Yamamoto announced that Prof Dr Sanja Musić Milanović, after receiving the World Health Organization’s 2022 Health Champion Award, will begin her global activity in health promotion.

“From the experiences of other countries presented today in their fight against obesity, it is clear that there are many activities. We have so many important measures that we can, and I am sure, we must implement. We have agreed on a joint conclusion whereby it is imperative to take steps to stop obesity – we have recommendations, a global plan and all we have to do is act globally, learn from one another. We have so many good examples, let’s be united! We must accelerate our efforts to stop obesity and for this we need all the voices of various generations”, Prof Dr Sanja Musić Milanović stated, and thanked the participants for their commitment to this global initiative.

During her four-day visit to the World Health Organization headquarters, the First Lady participated in a number of working meetings. She met with Naoko Yamamoto, Assistant Director-General for Universal Health Coverage – Healthier Populations; Etienne Krug, Director of the Department for Social Determinants of Health; Anshu Banerjee, Director of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing; Francesco Branca, Director of the Nutrition and Food Safety Department; Rüdiger Krech, Director of Health Promotion and Bente Mikkelsen Director of Noncommunicable Diseases.

The meeting addressed topics of mutual professional interest and opportunities for further cooperation in the area of global health promotion.
